While financial scams occur year-round, the holidays are a common time to see an increase. More online shopping and phone or email donation appeals means more opportunities for fraud. It is also an emotional time of year for many people, especially those who may feel lonely or isolated, which scammers can exploit.

USAging, the national association representing the network of Area Agencies on Aging, has a new campaign to educate older adults and their families about the most common types of financial scams, how to avoid them and, importantly, what to do when someone suspects a scam or fraud.


Sandy Markwood, CEO of USAging, talks about why older adults need to be especially vigilant during the holidays and tips for avoiding fraud or scams. Markwood will also highlight resources for people who suspect fraud, including the Eldercare Locator information and referral resource center.
